Cosmetic Grade Mineral Oil

MIR004: No. 10, No. 15, No. 26, No. 36, No. 68, No. 140
Cosmetic Grade Mineral Oil, referred to as white oil, CAS: 8042-47-5, is a mineral oil obtained by deep refining of hydrogenated raw materials. The main component is saturated hydrocarbon structure, without or with very small amounts of aromatic hydrocarbons, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur and other substances. It is colorless, odorless, chemically inert, and has good light stability. It is mainly used as a moisturizer, solvent, fat excipient, antistatic agent, emollient and skin conditioner in cosmetics. The difference between different types of white oil is mainly in viscosity.
Grade: Cosmetic Grade
Maximum usage of rinse-off products: 78.278%
Maximum usage of leave-on products: 42%
Application in the cosmetics industry
Cosmetic-grade white oil usually undergoes secondary or tertiary hydrogenation during the production process to ensure that its heavy metal content and lead content meet relevant national standards and meet environmental protection requirements. It can pass environmental supervision requirements such as PAHs and does not contain harmful substances such as phthalates. In terms of performance, cosmetic-grade white oil has good yellowing resistance and antioxidant properties, as well as good viscosity-temperature properties, and is suitable for making cosmetic products such as hair cream, hair oil, lipstick, facial oil, skin care oil, sunscreen, baby oil, vanishing cream, etc.
In the cosmetics industry, white oil is widely used due to its stability, non-sensitization and excellent occlusive properties, especially in products that require long-term moisturizing and protection of the skin barrier. However, people with oily skin or acne-prone people should avoid using skin care products containing white oil (mineral oil). This is because white oil is a non-volatile petroleum byproduct that can form a barrier on the surface of the skin, which may be beneficial for dry skin because it can help lock in moisture. However, for oily skin and acne-prone skin, this occlusive oil may clog pores and aggravate the formation and development of acne.
In addition, white oil may interfere with the skin's natural oil secretion, causing an imbalance of water and oil in the skin, which can cause more skin problems. One way to improve acne-prone skin is to maintain the skin's water and oil balance and avoid using occlusive ingredients that may aggravate pore blockage. Therefore, people with oily and acne-prone skin should give priority to products with a refreshing texture and no occlusive oils when choosing skin care products.
The main role of cosmetic grade white oil in cosmetics is as a base oily ingredient. It can form a thin film on the skin, which not only gives the product a smooth touch, but also helps prevent the evaporation of skin moisture through a barrier effect, thereby playing a role in moisturizing and hydrating. In addition, white oil can soften the skin and hair, and is often used in a variety of skin care and hair care products such as moisturizing oils, sunscreens, hair lotions, and hair conditioners. In cream products, the amount of white oil used is generally between 2% and 12%, while in products such as sunscreen oils and hair oils, the amount may be as high as about 80%.
The difference between cosmetic grade and industrial grade white oil
The main difference between cosmetic grade white oil and industrial grade white oil is their purity, safety, and applicable fields. The purity requirement of cosmetic grade white oil is very high because it is directly applied to human skin. It is deeply refined using hydrogenated raw materials, and the heavy metal content and other harmful substances are strictly controlled to ensure its safety, making it suitable for use in cosmetics and personal care products. Although industrial grade white oil is also refined, its purity is relatively low, and it contains varying degrees of impurities and harmful substances. It is not suitable for use in the cosmetic field, and is mainly used for industrial applications such as lubrication of mechanical equipment and production of chemical products. From the appearance, cosmetic grade white oil is usually colorless and transparent, appearing cleaner and clearer, while industrial grade white oil may contain impurities and have a darker color.
Cosmetic grade white oil is widely used in cosmetic formulas such as moisturizers, sunscreens, etc. due to its high purity and safety. It can also be used as a lubricant for cosmetic production machinery and a release agent for packaging containers. In contrast, industrial grade white oil is mainly used for lubrication, insulation, sealing, etc. of mechanical equipment, as well as in the production and processing of plastics and rubber.
